Internet Standards
Internet Standards dictate the operation of the Internet. These are the documents that organizations work hard together to promote a healthy growth of the Internet

Request for Comments (RFC) are technical and organizational notes about the Internet. Its has the history back the late 1960's. It's under the control of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)

The first RFC submitted was Host Software, by Steve Crocker of UCLA on April 7, 1969. Since then, there have been more than 7000 RFCs subbmited by different organizations over the years. The Internet has got so big and complicated, so the number of RFCs will only grow exponentially to address the needs of interoperability of different vendors/ technologies.

The RFCs are divided into categories:

  • Internet Standard RFCs - These are the standards of the Internet. They include IP, TCP, UDP, FTP, ARP, etc...
  • Internet Draft Standard RFCs - These are the draft versions of soon-to-be standards.
  • Proposed RFCs - The are the RFCs that are considered for standards. They have been tweaked and free of design issues and ready for the process to become standards. After this phase, it will become draft.
  • Best Current Practice RFCs - These are guidelines, methods, processes and recommendations. They don't have to be followed.
  • Experimental RFCs - These are results/specifications of some research project. They are published for the community general information and for archival of the work. They are not to become standards.
  • Informational RFCs - These are published for the information of the Internet community. They are not to become standards.
  • FYI RFCs - Just for FYI. They are not to become standards.
  • Historic RFCs - These are are either obsoleted by other RFCs or no longer practical or in use.
